The leaves are bigger, the plants more productive. That’s why Assam costs less. You’re getting quantity and strength, perfect for morning wake-up chai or masala chai where you need tea that won’t disappear under all those spices.
Darjeeling grows high up in the Himalayas, completely different climate. Cool, misty, slow-growing plants that produce way less tea. But what they produce is special—delicate, floral, with this muscatel grape taste that’s hard to describe until you try it.
Color’s lighter, more golden. Flavor’s subtle, changes as it cools. You don’t add milk to Darjeeling—that’s sacrilege. Drink it black, pay attention, notice the different notes. It’s expensive because production’s limited and demand’s high worldwide.
Caffeine-wise, Assam hits harder. Great for mornings, terrible if you drink it past 4 PM and want to sleep. Darjeeling’s gentler, better for afternoon sipping.
My honest opinion? Keep both. Assam for daily drinking, masala chai, when you need that caffeine kick and don’t want to think too hard. Darjeeling for quiet moments when you want to actually taste your tea, impress guests, or treat yourself.
